Clean Up Salford Quays has received a welcome boost to their community clean-up efforts, thanks to a donation from United Utilities’ Community Fund.
The group, based in Salford, is run by local residents who’re committed to improving Salford Quays, not only for the area’s inhabitants but to also reduce pollution and positively benefit the array of wildlife that call the Quays home.
To date, the group clean-up sessions has seen the removal of items such as fridges, road bollards and even abandoned boats from the Quays, with the volunteers regularly monitoring the water to remove any illegally tipped items where possible.
Volunteers met with River Rangers from the North West’s water company as they handed over the equipment. The donation consisted of items such as PPE, litter pickers, rakes and water testing kits, so that the volunteers can continue and expand their clean-up efforts, ensuring they can carry out their tasks safely and efficiently.
Paul Heilbron from Clean Up Salford Quays, commented: “With this donation, we’re now able to increase the number of clean-up jobs we can tackle, especially in the waterways around Salford Quays. Our efforts will have a direct positive effect on the local environment, reducing pollution and improving water quality, as well as enhancing the overall appearance of the area for residents, visitors, and wildlife.
“Additionally, this equipment has allowed our group to operate more independently and with greater confidence and efficiency – we want to say a huge thank you to United Utilities for all their help in providing us with the equipment we needed, we all appreciate it so much.”
Shy Bayly, Area Engagement Lead for Greater Manchester at United Utilities, commented: “The team at Clean Up Salford Quays are extremely passionate about what they do and it’s encouraging to see the volunteers doing all they can to maintain and improve their area, not only for themselves but for the benefit of the environment and its wildlife – we’re really pleased to have been able to support the group with their ongoing efforts.”
