Research published this afternoon from the UK Health Security Agency suggests that a booster jab will give around 75 per cent protection against the Omicron COVID variant

Data from the study showed a dramatic drop in effectiveness for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and a significant drop-off for two doses of Pfizer.

However, the third dose increased the protection against getting Covid symptoms to between 70 and 75 per cent

However Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunisation at the agency cautioned as the study used only data from 581 Omicron cases

“These early estimates should be treated with caution but they indicate that a few months after the second jab, there is a greater risk of catching the Omicron variant compared to Delta strain.”

Meanwhile the UK has recorded 58,194 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily total since 9 January, when 59,937 new cases were recorded.
