Antony Jenkins CBE, a trailblazer in the fintech industry and former CEO of Barclays, has officially assumed the role of Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University. The ceremonial handover from Lord Mandelson to Mr Jenkins took place this week in the historic Holden Gallery, marking a new chapter in the University’s leadership.

The event brought together an audience of University stakeholders and leaders from business, the arts, civic society, and the Lord Lieutenant for Greater Manchester to celebrate Antony Jenkins’ vision for the future and acknowledge Lord Mandelson’s transformative eight-year tenure.

In his inaugural address, Mr Jenkins expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the institution during such a pivotal moment in its history.

He said: “It is both humbling and exciting to join this incredible institution at such a pivotal time in its history. I am particularly inspired by this University’s commitment to empowering its students to think boldly and act purposefully. Together, I believe we can continue to build a University that inspires, innovates, and leads the way for generations to come.”

Antony outlined his ambitious priorities for the University, focusing on sustainability and climate action, research and innovation, and empowering students. He also highlighted the potential of the new Dalton building as a hub for groundbreaking research and knowledge exchange, underscoring the University’s role in tackling pressing societal challenges.

The ceremony also honoured the contributions of outgoing Chancellor Lord Mandelson, whose visionary leadership since 2016 has been pivotal in driving achievements across teaching, research, campus development, partnerships and sustainability.

In his farewell remarks, Lord Mandelson reflected on his tenure: “It has been the greatest honour and privilege to serve as Chancellor over the past eight years. During this time, I have witnessed remarkable growth and transformation. As the University steps into its third century, I am filled with confidence in its future. I’m also delighted to welcome Antony Jenkins as the new Chancellor and know his leadership will guide this exceptional institution to even greater heights.”
