The Guardian this morning is claiming that Greater Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham is planning a bid for the Labour keadership
The report claims that up to 80 MP’s are backing him to move just after the local elections with unnamed MP’s willing to stand aside for a by election
The Mayor is, adds the report, hoping to persuade Kier Starmer to stand aside preventing a leadership challenge and offering the former PM the role of Foreign Secretary
Andy Burnham it also claims has a popular person in mind to replace him as Greater Manchester’s Mayor with rumours of Manchester’s Chief Bev Craig
According to the report Allies say that he plans to outline a “radical rewiring” of the state in coming weeks – including changes to electoral system, inheritance tax and a 10-year growth plan.
Meanwhile Keir Starmer made clear he has no intention of standing aside telling Radio. 4’s today programme this morning
“I was elected in July 24 on a manifesto of change.
“It was a five-year term that I won with a landslide victory, and I’ll be judged at the end of that period, at the next election, by whether I’ve delivered on what I promised”
The Telegraph however says Labour’s ruling National Executive will no longer stand in the way of Andy Burnham’s return to Parliament.
In order to get a head start before Burnham lands a safe seat both Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner will take a run at No.10 directly the scale of the council disaster is known according to the report
