Andrew Malkinson who was jailed for seventeen years for a rape in Manchester that he did not commit has slammed The head of the watchdog that examined potential miscarriages for saying she was scapegoated over the failings in her case

Helen Pitcher told The Times that she had been unfairly ousted from the Criminal Case Review Commission (CCRC) over the Andrew Malkinson scandal, and said that “a head had to roll and I was chosen for that role”.

However Malkinson said that Pitcher was attempting to ‘portray herself as the victim’, adding that he knows what it ‘truly is like’ to be a scapegoat.

He called for a complete overhaul of the CCRC, claiming the body ‘obstructed my fight for justice’, and repeated demands for Ms Pitcher to be fired and stripped of her OBE

Pitcher handed in her resignation as chair of the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) on Tuesday afternoon after learning that an independent panel had concluded by a majority of two to one that she was no longer fit to be chair.

Malkinson added that he agreed  that others need to be held accountable.

The CCRC’s senior leadership, starting with the CEO, must also resign to pave the way for root and branch reform.” he said

Last July The justice secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said that Henley’s report showed Pitcher was “unfit to fulfil her duties” and that she was seeking her removal.
