Tameside Council have revealed its plans for Droylsden which they say will transform the town into a vibrant, green, and connected town centre has been unveiled.
The plans will link the marina to the retail area with green, walkable routes by reopening the historic Hollinwood branch of the canal and revitalise public spaces in the town centre like Droylsden Square and Villemomble Square with greenery, seating, lighting for events.
Backed by £100,000 in funding from Homes England and the GMCA, the plan aims to create an inclusive town centre that supports local businesses, encourages community activity, and attract new investment.
Plans also include better access across the busy A662 Manchester Road, with safer, more inclusive routes for walking and cycling that better connect people to the town centre and the redevelopment of key sites such as the Concorde Suite, and Droylsden Shopping Centre to improve the town centre offer and create a destination for new visitors.
The council is now continuing to work with stakeholders like New Era (owners of the shopping centre) and Cushman & Wakefield to explore development options which includes the demolition and redevelopment of the Concord Suite and seek funding and partners to bring the masterplan forward.
Councillor Stephen Homer, Tameside Council Executive Member (Towns, Transport and Connectivity) said: “This is fantastic news for Droylsden. The masterplan has been shaped by feedback from residents and stakeholders to address the negative aspects of the town and identify opportunities for change. There is still a lot of work ahead to source funding and investment but the masterplan will set the foundation for the next 15 years and is vitality important for the future and growth of the town so we can look to create more jobs and homes in the area and help sustainably reshape it as a place people can enjoy and spend time in.”
