One of Britain’s most famous market towns is to have a new market.
Eccles, home of the famous cake, will host The Makers Market once a month starting from Saturday June 11. The town already has two permanent markets and the popular Farmers Market and Crafts Market every third Saturday in the month.

The Love Eccles Makers Market, which offers everything from art and crafts to vintage stalls, currently trades in Manchester’s Spinningfields and Northern Quarter, Didsbury and at locations across Cheshire.

The market will run along Church Street where James Birch first sold Eccles Cakes from his shop in 1793. It will run from 10am to 4pm along with live music performances and a street food arena.

Eccles Town Team which brings together Salford City Council and other partners to support local businesses and raise the profile of Eccles, is supporting the market.

Councillor Lisa Stone, chair of Eccles Town Team, welcomed the artisan market and said: “This is a fantastic new addition to Eccles and we hope it will prove very popular with fans of unusual crafts and hand made products and good food.

“Eccles is just 10 minutes from Manchester by train and has great public transport and road access, with parking right in the town centre. We hope the market will draw in visitors from far and wide.

“The organisers originally asked about running a market from Monton Green but, after careful research, agreed with us that the village would struggle to cope with extra traffic and that a market could disrupt activities at Monton Unitarian Church and damage the Green.

“We worked with them to find an alternative and everyone agreed Eccles was a more suitable location because of its parking and easy access. We look forward to seeing them in operation next month.”

Among the goodies on offer at the new market will be artwork, handmade jewellery, retro furniture and vintage items as well as food and drink including doggie patisserie from the Woofleshire Bakery.

The Loose Change Buskers will be performing live all day at the first market on Saturday June 11, raising funds for Cancer Research. To date they have raised over £287,000 for Cancer Research through busking at events such as the market.
