The future of TGI Fridays restaurants in the UK is in doubt this morning after the collapse of talks in the USA over merger proposals

The chain is being forced to sell eighty seven of its locations across the country with administrators on standby

Hostmore, which owns TGI in this country, is now scrambling to sell the franchise so it can continue to operate under new ownership and save thousands of jobs.

First opening in the U.K. in 1986 the chain was founded in New York in 1965 when the first restaurant was opened by Alan Stillman on the corner of 63rd Street and 1st Avenue.

The themed restaurants – whose name stands for ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ were inspired by circus performances and became known for their bartenders mixing cocktails in dramatic fashion.

There are four TGI Friday’s restaurants in Greater Manchester,  at the Royal Exchange in the city centre, at the Trafford Centre, in Prestwich and in Sale.
