Homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley recently welcomed 90 pupils from St Damian’s RC Science College for a day of learning outside of the classroom.
On Friday 3 February, 90 year 10 pupils from St Damian’s RC Science College had a tour of Emmaus Mossley’s community home and Secondhand Superstore. The pupils met with staff at the charity and formerly homeless people to learn more about homelessness, reuse and social enterprise.
Angela Odgen, Director of Business Services at St Damian’s RC Science College, said: “Everyone had a wonderful time at Emmaus. The pupils particularly enjoyed learning about the background of Emmaus and the talk of what support is provided for people who experience homelessness.
“The pupils were also extremely surprised with what happens ‘behind the scenes’ to get donated items ready for sale, and what is done to prepare items for recycling. We can’t thank Emmaus enough for their welcome, hospitality, and the sessions they delivered for year 10.”
Emmaus Mossley supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home, work, companionship and individual support. The majority of Emmaus Mossley’s income is raised from their large Secondhand Superstore which sells donated and refurbished furniture, clothes, bric-a-brac and vintage items.
The St Damian’s pupils were split into groups for tours of Emmaus Mossley followed by talks explaining more about homelessness and wider issues in society. The importance of the Emmaus Mossley social enterprise and reuse was also explained, highlighting how it reduces waste to landfill.
Hazel Hodkinson, Retail Manager at Emmaus Mossley, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the St Damian’s young people to Emmaus Mossley. They were all very engaged, respectful and a real credit to themselves and their school.”
“As well as breaking down some of the misconceptions of homelessness, we also gave the pupils an insight into our social enterprise and highlighted the many benefits of shopping second hand. We hope the pupils enjoyed their day and look forward to them visiting our Secondhand Superstore again soon.”
