A 46 year old man is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a tram on Aytoun Street in the city centre in the early hours of this morning.

The collision left the pedestrian on the floor with head and back injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The tram driver provided a negative breath sample and no arrests have been made.

Any witnesses to the collision are encouraged to speak to police.

Police Constable Karl Horner of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We’re currently piecing together what happened around the time of the collision that led to this man suffering these injuries.

“I appreciate it was in the early hours of the morning but it is a popular area for nightlife and there would have been some people around who would have seen something.

“There would have also been people driving in the area – if you have dashcam footage, that could be really useful to us in our investigation.”

Anyone with information should contact GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting reference number 63 of 16/12/17 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
