Paddy’s Day is around the corner and it is one of the very first major mass celebrations in the city after two years of gruelling lockdowns, and excitement is already building for Manchester Irish Festival and Manchester’s St Patrick’s Parade.

When Manchester triggered the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, workers were hired from Ireland because they would accept lower wages than the Manchester locals. They lived in the worst houses – in Little Ireland, the area around Oxford Road station.
In its annual celebration of Irish Manchester, New Manchester Walks will unearth the best stories of Little Ireland, recalling Auntie’s Bar, stopping off at the site of George Orwell’s doss house, searching for a whiff of the Waxie’s Dargle and maybe even enjoying a glass of a black Irish drink with a creamy head.
