Manchester’s biggest outdoor learning provider We Are Adventurers is once again opening its popular adventure holiday clubs this May half term, but this time with a tasty new twist.
For the first time, the organisation is introducing a ‘Foodie Friday’ experience at its Brookburn Primary School site, where children can take part in campfire cooking sessions.
Designed as a fun way to round off the week, these new sessions will see children learning to cook safely outdoors, with age appropriate activities including making damper bread, toasting marshmallows, popping popcorn and cooking sausages.
Founder Paul Wilcox, a former British Army instructor and passionate advocate for outdoor education, said: “We’re always looking for new ways to engage children and give them experiences they’ll remember. What better than cooking on a fire they’ve helped to build?
It’s hands on, it’s educational and it brings a real sense of achievement. Plus, it’s a great way to tempt kids away from screens and into the outdoors. We can’t wait to see their faces when they taste what they’ve made.”
While the new campfire cooking experience is exclusive to the Friday session at Brookburn Primary School, full-day holiday clubs will run throughout the rest of the week and also run as usual at St John’s Catholic Primary School in Chorlton.
Taking place from 27th-30th May at Brookburn, and from 27th May-5th June at St John’s (to align with their two-week half term), the clubs are open to all local families, regardless of whether their children attend the host schools.
Children aged 4 to 11 can expect action packed days featuring den building, archery, nature crafts and classic forest school favourites like marshmallow toasting. Each session is led by qualified Forest School leaders and is carefully designed to encourage confidence, creativity and teamwork.
Anna, a parent from Manchester whose daughter attended the Easter sessions, said:
“My daughter always comes back super calm, happy, and confident from this holiday club. It’s impressive. It’s totally worth it.”
As well as providing fun and adventure, the clubs offer real wellbeing benefits, helping over 10,000 children reconnect with nature since their launch in 2013. Just six minutes in nature can boost serotonin levels, and outdoor play has been shown to improve focus, emotional balance and resilience.
Each full-day session runs from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and is priced at £35 per child. Sibling discounts are available, with two children attending for £68.25 and three children for £101.50.
