Manchester’s Victoria Station came to astandstill tonight after a member of staff was allegedly assaulted by a commuter.
Problems built up earlier at the station due to a signalling problem between Rochdale and Castleton
Northern Rail have now tweeted that
Disruption caused by a points failure between Manchester Victoria and Rochdale has now ended. Services are no longer affected by this problem
Trains are now starting to run again
According to an eyewitness on Twitter
“I was stood right next to him whilst he was shouting. He was angry, but understandably so – he’d been pissed about and made to use the stairs several times even though he couldn’t/shouldn’t because of an obvious foot/ankle injury because of cancellations and platform changes”
Another eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News:
The man had just recently had an operation on his foot and he had a 10 week old baby.He was placed on three wrong trains and then when the right one came, he was on the wrong platform, so when he asked a member of staff to help him they said get a job.He went up to one of the workers and told them what had happened and what the delay was.All he said was he wasn’t happy, he has a newborn baby and has been passed from pillar to post. He did shout but so did the majority of us who have been waiting to get out of the station.”
A statement on the Northern Rail Twitter feed said that “Due to passengers causing a disturbance on a train at Manchester Victoria some lines will be blocked. Disruption is expected until 19:30.”
