The University of Bolton has changed its name to the University of Greater Manchester.
Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor, made the “historic” announcement this morning on campus to staff, who applauded the news.
He said: “I am delighted to announce that in two minutes the Secretary of State will announce that we are the University of Greater Manchester.”
The institution, which celebrates its 200th anniversary next year, was given the go-ahead by the regulator the Office for Students (OfS) to adopt the new name with immediate effect.
Professor Holmes, who will have led the University for 20 years in 2025, said: “This is an historic moment for this University. You are now staff of the University of Greater Manchester.
“Bolton is an amazing town and it is our base, and it is our home where we intend to stay, it is the home of the University of Greater Manchester, now in Bolton.”
Governors and current and past Students’ Union Presidents of the University unanimously supported the name change, which was submitted to the OfS 17 months ago.
An independent economic impact assessment report commissioned by the University earlier this year, revealed that the benefit to the local economy would be millions of pounds a year.
