The latest instalment of the Tory betting scandal on the General Election date has seen Tony Lee, the husband of the candidate Laura Saunders whom the Gambling Commission are investigating taking “leave of absence”

Lee is the Director of Campaigns for the party

Yesterday it was revealed that a police protection officer in the employ of the Prime Minister was being investigated along with Laura Saunders

Meanwhile Betting market data analysed by the FT shows s surge in gambling on July election before the prime minister called the snap poll just over four weeks ago

Last week saw another Tory  Candidate Craig Williams saying he had made a huge error of judgement” over betting on the date of the next general election

A Conservative Party spokesman told the BBC, which first reported the claims: “We have been contacted by the Gambling Commission about a small number of individuals. As the Gambling Commission is an independent body, it wouldn’t be proper to comment further, until any process is concluded.”

A spokesman for the commission said: “The Gambling Commission regulates gambling in the interests of consumers and the wider public.

“Currently, the commission is investigating the possibility of offences concerning the date of the election. This is an ongoing investigation, and the commission cannot provide any further details at this time. We are not confirming or denying the identity of any individuals involved in this investigation.”
