Rishi Sunak has announced that he will step down as Tory leader once the arrangements for choosing his successor have been put into place

Speaking from the Downing Street lectern ahead of visiting Buckingham Palace to tend his resignation to the King, he said sorry to the people of the country

In an emotional and gracious speech he said

“To the country I would like to say first and foremost I am sorry”

“I have heard your anger, your disappointment and I take responsibility”

“This is a difficult day at the end of a number of difficult days but I leave this job honoured to have been your Prime Minister.”

Sunak heralded the arrival of Keir Starmer. “In this job his successes will be all our successes,” he says.

“Whatever our disagreements in this campaign he is a decent, public spirited man who I respect”.
