Stockport has a new District Commander as Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes has been appointed as one of GMP’s seven new District Commanders
About Manchester caught up with him last week in the Town Centre during a day of action against illegal off road bikes and electric bikes
Much of that work is preventative, how they are often used in other anti social behavior issues, gathering intelligence from communities about who is using the bikes, where they are stored at night.
We will be showing up at night, arriving at people’s garages and taking away those bikes to ensure that Stockport is a safe place for everybody to enjoy with their families going about their private lives
Ch Supt Lewis Hughes joined GMP in 2003 and hasn’t looked back since.
He brings an amplitude of knowledge and experience with him following his role as a Detective Superintendent in our Serious Crime Division where he managed multiple complex operations including the murder investigation into Stuart Everett earlier this year.
After a torso was discovered in Kersal Dale woodlands Ch Supt Hughes led an extensive investigation spanning over four months where a multitude of specialist resources were deployed to search in locations across Salford, Manchester and Bury. Through his tenacity and strong leadership, we were able to identify the victim at the centre of this tragic case and are closer to getting justice with two individuals charged with his murder.
Stockport is a great town,Ch Supt Hughes tells us.It is a good place to live, it is a safe place to live and we are keen to keep Stockport that way-Our focus is to have a highly visible neighbourhood resource both in the Town Centre and in each of the comunities-You won’t get a different level of service regardless of where you live or what the challenges are in that community
Stockport is a changing place, a lot of people are moving in especially into the town Centre and it will impose challenges no doubt but Ch Supt Hughes wants to be ahead of that
There were some issues in the immediate aftermath of the opening of the new Transport interchange which sits proudly in the Town Centre centering around anti social actions but these have generally gone away
Ch Supt Hughes has now been in the post for six weeks. He sees it as great opportunity and everybody has made him feel very welcome and is looking forward to the challenges in his new role
He will working closely with Stockport Councillor Frankie Singleton who is the Executive Member for Communities,Culture and Sport who is looking forward to continuing their close working relationship with the police and other agencies and joined us in the Town Centre
