Labour leader Sir Kier Starme has kicked off election year with the slogan “Let’s get Britain’s future back”
In a speech in Bristol this morning his message to the country was that the opportunity to decide Britain’s future ‘rests in your hands’ and ‘turn the page’ on a Tory government
Whether you support us or not we will work for you he told the audience
‘We are a changed Labour Party he said
‘No longer a party of gesture politics or a party of protest but a party of service’
He accused the Tories of “denigrating the people who serve this country” during their 14 years of power, criticising “a total lack of respect” for public sector workers
He said that Rishi Sunak was living in “fantasy land” if he thought the economy was good territory for the Tories.
“We don’t just expect an election on the economy, we want an election on the economy.”
While he wants to see lower taxes on working people “on principle” he said that growth is key…and we’ll have to see what happens at the next government fiscal event.
Alluding to the earlier pledge to borrow £28b for Green Growth, he said that “If the fiscal rules don’t allow it, Labour will borrow less.”
He promised a politics that treads a little lighter on our lives
“It asks you to moderate your political wishes out of respect for the wishes of others”
