A fierce solar storm gave people across the region a rare view of the Northern Lights overnight as much of the U.K. and Europe as well as the US was treated to the phenomenon

People across the region took to social media to post images of the display which lit up the mostly clear skies
It was the most powerful solar storm to hit in over 20 years and as burst of charged particles from a series of powerful eruptions from the Sun’s surface hit the earth’s magnetic field people were treated to a startling display in the night skies
