Smart Works Greater Manchester is calling supporters to “Step Up” and take part in its exciting new fundraising challenge this March. With a mission to raise £35,000, the charity is asking participants to walk 10,000 steps a day to help fund the vital work they do across the Greater Manchester region. For those who want to, they can also run, cycle or spin the equivalent distance.

March 2025 marks a significant milestone for Smart Works, where it will meet the end of its three-year plan and celebrate its tenth birthday.

To commemorate this achievement, Smart Works strives to support 10,000 women nationally by the end of the year. To help reach its target, Smart Works is asking the people of the northwest region to get their trainers on and take part in the Step Up challenge, which will see participants cover approximately 130 miles over the course of the month. This is the equivalent to the perimeter of the ten boroughs that make up Greater Manchester. By registering, participants have the chance to make a real difference in the local community, whilst taking part in a challenge that supports their own physical and mental health.

Smart Works Greater Manchester is calling on local businesses, community groups, and individuals to sign up and recruit a team of up to five participants to take part in the challenge.

Set up an inter-departmental competition at work or go solo and challenge yourself to go the distance. Whether you choose to walk, run or cycle the distance, every step taken is a step toward helping women overcome the barriers to employment. Prizes will be given to those with the highest amount fundraised, so get competitive and start moving!

Donations raised through the Step Up challenge will directly contribute towards funding Smart Works’ valuable services that help unemployed women across Greater Manchester develop their careers. This includes professional one-to-one interview coaching, bespoke dressing consultations and free, work-appropriate clothing to equip them with the necessary tools to secure employment and achieve financial independence.

At a time of significant economic strain, Smart Works’ services have become more crucial than ever to the well-being and the livelihood of unemployed women facing difficult circumstances. The charity’s work has been instrumental in transforming the lives of many women living in the regions most socially deprived communities where female unemployment is highest, and facing financial instability across the UK. With the generosity of participants and donors, Smart Works can continue to help unemployed women regain their confidence and forge a brighter, more secure future for themselves and their families.
