Rochdale Leisure Centre, a leisure venue managed by Your Trust on behalf of Rochdale Borough Council, welcomed the local Rochdale community following its recent gym refurbishments.

The Open Day took place on Saturday 20th May, inviting everyone in the local area to the centre, showcasing the new gyms and facilities with the opportunity for those attending to try everything free of charge for the day. This included the chance to test out the new gym equipment, group exercise classes, as well as gym floor workouts.

The day held a variety of free activities to bring the community together, with free health checks, food tasting and nutrition advice, hosted by the Your Trust Nutrition and Wellbeing Team. There were also a range of activities for children and young people to help get them active in a fun and enjoyable way.

The leisure centre recently reopened its gyms following an investment of £430,000 to refurbish the main and the ladies only gym areas, featuring a brand-new range of equipment and layout. The updates include new cardio equipment (treadmills, rowing machine, bikes and cross-trainers), free weights, strength and conditioning and functional training kit, suitable for all levels of abilities. The aim of the gym refurbishment is to encourage and support people in the local area to live a more active and healthier lifestyle, with the space being a welcome environment for all to enjoy.

With over 1800 visits to the leisure centre on the day, the charity is hopeful its updated facilities will encourage members of the community to engage in classes, social activities and increase their fitness levels.

David Gelsthorpe, Chair of Trustees, said: “It was great to see people attending the Open Day over the weekend, we really want to make our facilities as accessible for the community as possible.

“As a charity, we actively reinvest in our facilities and activities across the borough to support local residents to live an active, creative and healthy life. Rochdale Leisure Centre is widely used, and not to mention loved, by all. The recent gym refurbishments ensure that we continue to offer modern, up to date facilities, and it’s important to us that the centre and activities can be accessed by the whole of the local community at an affordable price.

“The refurbishment at Rochdale Leisure Centre is part of our ongoing schedule of redevelopment work and follows the re-investment made to the gym at Littleborough Sports Centre last year.”

Councillor Sue Smith, Cabinet member for communities, culture and co-operatives, said: “Rochdale Leisure Centre is a fantastic leisure venue in the borough that really is a welcome space for all to attend, as well as providing a supportive atmosphere. It not only encourages people to be active and healthy, but it’s so much more – it’s a brilliant community space that’s fun, sociable and a safe environment for all.”
