A man who paid £1.90 less for a ticket to travel on Northern Rail in Manchester faced prosecution

Sam Williamson was using ‘Anytime Singles’ at peak times with 16-25 railcards, which makes the ticket invalid on a trip into the centre of Manchester from Broadbottom which he bought on the ticketing app.

Williamson says that when buying the ticket it was not explicitly stated that the ticket was not valid when travelling during peak time

The ticket is named Anytime – meaning there are no restrictions on when the holder can travel – but he bought it using a railcard discount for passengers aged 16-25.

Campaigners say that this information is buried in the small print by Northern so people never see it

Meanwhile the Department for Transport has instructed Northern to ‘urgently’ review cases where passengers have been prosecuted for using an ‘Anytime’ ticket
