Over the course of December, Greater Manchester Police have been taking part in a National campaign called Operation Limit.

The campaign began on Friday 1 December 2023 and will run until Monday 1 January 2024.

Officers have taken a proactive approach to help prevent deaths and serious injury caused by motorists choosing to drive under the influence of drink and drugs.

Roadside checks around Greater Manchester have already taken place and will continue to do so over the Christmas and New Year period, with operations running in areas such as Bolton, Bury, Salford, Tameside and Wigan to name a few.

So far, there have been more than 150 traffic offence reports handed out to drivers for offences ranging from using mobile devices behind the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and speeding, all of which, alongside drink and drug driving, make up the ‘Fatal Four’.

There have also been offence reports handed out for vehicle defects. Four vehicles have been seized by Police for no insurance and two cars have been taken off the road due to their current state not being up to the standard required to travel on our roads.

Officers have required 14 road users to take breathalyser tests, all which came back negative. There have been five drug wipes, three were retuned negative and two positive, with those two drivers being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

Inspector Marie Eldred from GMP’s Safer Transport Team said: “We are really happy to lend our support and resources to the National campaign, Operation Limit which takes place across the whole of December.

“We unapologetically taking a zero-tolerance approach to drink and drug driving by proactively employing breathalysers and drug wipes at the roadside for immediate results.

“These operations will continue to take place over the rest of the festive and New Year period, as we continue to make the roads of Greater Manchester a safer place for all that use them.”
