Oldham Council have become the second Greater Manchester Council to vote to withdraw from Greater Manchester’s Places for Everyone Scheme
The motion from the opposition Liberal Democrats was passed which will mean that Oldham council executives will have to write to the Secretary of State Angela Rayner to request the borough is withdrawn from the scheme
Local opposition to housing developments on green belt land in the Borough has been strong with objection to Labour’s support for large-scale housing plans like Places for Everyone reinforcing the idea that they prioritise development over environmental concerns.
Stockport Council have already withdrawn from the scheme and last night’s decision if approved by Angela Rayner will place the scheme in some doubt
Oldham Lib Dem leader Howard Sykes said: “Expensive luxury housing on the greenbelt is not the answer to the housing crisis. This will be a developer and profit-led plan, not a people and need based plan.
“Is Labour really suggesting that the best Oldham can do is back a plan that was designed in Manchester ten years ago, with no idea about the local challenges we face? I think we can do better.”
