Oldham Archives will be temporarily closed over the summer while we move the service to its purpose-built new home in the redeveloped Spindles Centre.
As the Local Interest Centre and then Oldham Local Studies and Archives, the service spent 50 years in its original home at 84 Union Street.
Since March 2024, a temporary service has operated in Oldham Library. This temporary service will close at 4pm on Saturday 31 May 2025.
Moving to a new location is a huge task and we will have to reduce some of our services until the work is done.
From 1 June 2025 until we open in our new home at Spindles, in-person access to our original, printed or digital collections will not be possible.
During the move, staff access to the collections will also be limited. We will do our best to answer enquiries and will explain why if this isn’t possible.
Councillor Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said: “Residents will soon be able to make full use of the popular Oldham Archives service in its permanent, state-of-the-art home in Spindles, where it will join the new indoor market and events spaces.
“Until then, users of all Oldham Libraries can access digital resources, including Ancestry, Find My Past, British Newspaper Archive, and the National Library of Scotland OS Map collection online for free using our public computers.”
