No trams will run from St Peter’s Square to Market Street or Piccadilly Gardens from this Saturday for two weeks as Metrolink begins work to replace tram tracks in part of Manchester city centre

The work, at York Street, is scheduled to take place from Saturday, 1 March until Sunday 16 March.

Ashton-under-Lyne services will operate to Victoria, calling at Piccadilly, Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street and Shudehill en-route. Other cross-city services will divert via Exchange Square.

Passengers can still cross the city by changing trams at Victoria or disembark at Deansgate-Castlefield to usefree bus services to reach stops across the city centre. There will also be a signed walking route to direct people between St Peter’s Square, Market Street and Piccadilly Gardens.

Further track works are planned for various city centre locations later this year including at High Street, Church Street, Portland Street, Aytoun Street and Piccadilly Gardens.

The rolling programme of works – funded from the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement – will ensure the network keeps on delivering safe, reliable and accessible services for millions more people into the future.

Ian Davies, TfGM’s Interim Network Director for Metrolink, said: “Metrolink is the biggest light rail system in the country, so it’s critically important that we keep investing in the network and making sure it remains a safe, reliable and accessible way to get around Greater Manchester well into the future.

“We will be doing everything we can to minimise disruption for passengers, and I would encourage people to plan ahead and check our website or the Bee Network app for the latest travel information before setting off.”A
