The former Greater Manchester Police Chief Sir Peter Fahy has described the proposals for National Service as an insult to young people

Fahy wrote on X earlier today that

The more I have thought about the “National Service” the more it seems an insult to young people and just out of touch. Giving much more support to youth charities sports clubs and organisations like @scouts and @NationalVPC police cadets would be far better

Rishi Sunak said that compulsory national service for 18-year-olds would ‘foster a culture of service’.

In a speech this morning Labour leader Kier Starmer dismissed it as a ‘teenage Dad’s Army’, while serving Tory minister for Northern Ireland Steve Baker said the policy had been ‘sprung on candidates’.
