Professor Steve Powis is to stand down as medical director at NHS England.

It comes a week after Amanda Pritchard announced she was leaving. Sources say Prof Powis told colleagues in Jan he was going to leave in the summer after seven years.

“After nearly 8 years in the role, this summer I will be stepping down as National Medical Director for NHS England.
It has been an immense privilege to serve as National Medical Director and to work alongside so many fantastic colleagues, all dedicated to improving the NHS.”

The 64 year old became a household name during the Covid-19 pandemic, regularly appearing at Downing Street press conferences.

He also witnessed the delivery of the first ever Covid-19 jab outside a clinical trial.
