A 39 year old man who stabbed his victim fourteen times has been jailed today in Manchester
Paul Farrington, of Rippleton Road, Manchester, will serve 12 years and 9 months in jail and 17 years on extended license.
The victim, who was in his 40s, survived the frenzied attack by Farrington and supported the investigation against him.
Farrington and the victim were known to one another and at around 10pm on the night of the attack in July 2021, the victim came across Farrington on Rippleton Road in Wythenshawe. Farrington then approached him in an aggressive manner before stabbing him repeatedly with an ice pick.
Passers-by saw what was happening and came to help while Farrington fled the scene. Police arrived soon after and on speaking to the witnesses they were able to identify Farrington as a suspect.
The South City of Manchester targeting team successfully traced Farrington to a family address where he was hiding out and quickly moved in to make an arrest. He was subsequently identified by a key witness whilst the victim was still in a medically induced coma.
Farrington was charged and remanded, and soon after the victim was woken from his coma and confirmed that Paul Farrington was his attacker.
In light of the evidence against him, Farrington pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to Section 18 assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Detective Constable Martyn Gibson, who ran the investigation in GMP City of Manchester South CID, said: “This was an abhorrent assault which required life-saving heart surgery and has left the victim with scars that will be visible for the rest of his life.
The perpetrator, Paul Farrington, is an aggressive and violent man and he is now rightly behind bars. I would like to thank the bravery of the witnesses for coming forwards and providing the evidence we needed to bring him to justice.”
