Stockport’s newest cultural landmark, Stockroom, is set to open its doors on Saturday, May 24, with a jam-packed day of fun, art, and events – and a show-stopping DJ set from legendary Manchester DJ Mr. Scruff, performing alongside MC Kwasi, presented in collaboration with Nam Soundsystem.

Stockport-raised and Manchester based Mr. Scruff is known for his ability to blend a vast array of musical styles in his DJ sets. Soul, funk, gospel, disco, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, ska, reggae, Latin, afrobeat, house, techno, garage, hip-hop, ambient, and beyond – his sets are a joyful exploration of sound, fuelled by a love of connection and curiosity.

Joining him will be ‘original smile factory’ MC Kwasi, the iconic host of the seminal Friends and Family events. MC Kwasi has collaborated with artists including Suns of Arqa, Community Charge, The Messengers, Mark Rae, DJ Vadim, and Beatphreak.

Entry is free, with tickets available from Stockroom on the day of the event, Saturday, May 24, from 4pm on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum of one ticket per person. Tickets can be collected from the ticket stall on Adlington Walk. Attendees must return by 5.30pm to secure entry, with Mr. Scruff and MC Kwasi’s set running from 6 – 8pm.

Gwen Riley – Jones, Programme Manager at Stockroom, said: “We’re thrilled to have Mr. Scruff, a local legend, join us for our opening celebration. His unique style and connection to the community embody what Stockroom is all about – creativity, culture, and bringing people together.”

Mr Scruff said: “I grew up in Stockport, and it is great to see how many positive and creative spaces have been popping up in the town centre over the last few years.”

Stockroom is a new £14.5 million cultural and community space in Merseyway, transforming disused former retail units into a hub of creativity, learning, and live entertainment. Designed to be a vibrant space for all ages, Stockroom offers an additional town centre library, creative spaces for children, Stockroom Studios for live events, a café bar, and access to Stockport’s historical archives. It is part of Stockport Council’s £1 billion regeneration plan to breathe new life into the town centre.
