Greater Manchester Police have welcomed the news that The Prime Minister Kier Starmer will unveil plans to restore the so called Bobby on the beat
Starmer has announced that officers on foot will patrol every busy neighbourhood at peak times
The new measures to be announced will mean named and contactable officers for every neighbourhood and guaranteed police patrols in busy areas at peak times, such as town centres
Greater Manchester is to receive funding for 176 new frontline officers, in addition to the 670 officers serving our local policing teams across its 10 districts.
Greater Manchester Police Every day that every area of the region has neighbourhood tasking teams to proactively tackle crime, neighbourhood crime teams to bring offenders to justice, neighbourhood policing teams to patrol our streets and ensure community safety, and a prevention hub to solve problems and reduce crime.
The plans to be announced by the Prime Minister form part of the government’s Plan for Change and Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee, putting 13,000 more neighbourhood officers on our streets, up more than 50% across the country
The government’s new Police Standards and Performance Improvement Unit will ensure police performance is consistently and accurately measured, so the government can narrow the gap between the best and worst performing forces.
This will make clear that everyone across the country, no matter where they live, can expect the same standards from the police, with a new online tool so the public are able to check how their local force is performing and hold forces to account.
Assistant Chief Constable Matthew Boyle, GMP’s lead for local policing, said: “Our problem-solving approach to neighbourhood policing is seeing us properly tackle the issues that matter most to the public, with a focus on working with local communities and partners to keep our streets safe.
“Ensuring our local policing teams are dedicated to making our public spaces be safe and feel safe for those who live, work, and visit our city-region is a top priority.
“In Greater Manchester, we are proactively fighting crime and bringing more offenders to justice. Operation Vulcan has seen us work relentlessly with partners to address long-standing issues and make streets safer, while our monthly Operation Avro has combined daily local crime-fighting with the support of specialist resources to tackle suspects and engage with the public.
“The Government’s announcement today only strengthens the neighbourhood policing guarantee we introduced to the people of GM two years ago. We are continuing to ensure we are engaging with our communities, and they know how to engage with us, so we can work together to keep preventing crime.”
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “GMP has led the way in prioritising neighbourhood policing with named teams in place across our city-region. This approach has brought about real reductions in neighbourhood crime, such as burglary, and is helping to make our communities feel safer.
“This new commitment from the Government is a clear and welcome sign that GMP’s groundbreaking work is understood and valued. The extra funding for more officers will support the force to build on the strong foundations it has laid and go even further in rooting out crime and anti-social behaviour in all parts of Greater Manchester.”
