The former Lib Dem MP Andrew Stunell has died

Stunell was a former member for the Hazel Grove constituency first elected in 1997 and served as MP until 2015

1997 winning more than 50 percent of votes, a position he held until 2015.

He served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government in the coalition Governyfrom May 2010 to September 2012.

Lord Stunell was elevated to the House of Lords where he sat as a Liberal Democrat life peer

Lib Dem leader Ed Davy said in tribute

Andrew was a dedicated public servant, not least to the people of Hazel Grove whom he served for 18 years as their local MP, a formidable campaigner, and a committed Liberal who worked passionately on issues like the environment, local democracy and political reform.

“Andrew has been a source of wisdom and support to me for many years. His humour and kindness will be remembered fondly by all those who came into contact with him. My thoughts and prayers are with Andrew’s wife, Gillian, and all his family.”

Lib Dem peers in the House of Lords said on X

“We are devastated to learn of the death of our friend and colleague Andrew Stunell. Andrew was a superb politician and a dedicated local champion who spent a lifetime working to improve the lives of others as a councillor, MP and peer.”
