Nigel Farage who yesterday announcd that he was returning to the political frey has told the media during this morning’s rounds that the UK should aim for zero net migration.

He told the Today Programme that we cannot go on as we are and we have to limit numbers citing a net fifure of around 500-600K

“Our quality of life in this country is and if that means in some sectors there’d be shortages – what that then means is that wages woud then go up and we would start to encourage people to learn skills, rather than heading off to university and doing social sciences.”

Pressed on whether those with skilled workers visascould continue to come in. He said they could but in limited numbers.

Farage later in the interview added that he couild take you to streets in Oldham where no one speaks English.Pressed on his statement he said that he had been there and so had the Guardian

Meanwhile the Tories have said that they will propose an annual cap on worker and family visas in their efforts to try to reduce immigration year on year in a future parliament. The proposed plan would give parliament a direct role in setting levels of migration, with MPs having a vote on the number.

Home Secretary James Cleverley told the media this morning that “we know that immigration, legal migration, has been too high over the last couple of years.” but added that he we also recognised that there are benefits to migration.

“My mother came here as a migrant, as did many other people in the UK who have contributed enormously to our society and to our economy.”

At an event in Bolton Labour leader Keir Starmer said that immigration has become “out of control” under the Conservatives and said the Tory announcement for a cap on migration visas ( was meaningless as they have not given a number describing it as a “cap without a cap”.
