Commuters are being urged to plan ahead of roadworks on the East Lancashire Road in the New Year which will help to improve bus reliability, ease congestion and make junctions safer for pedestrians.

As part of the Salford Bolton Network Improvements (SBNI) Programme, works will take place on the A580 East Lancashire Road at the Lancaster Road and Worsley Road junctions from Monday, January 8 and are due to complete in summer 2024.

The works, which are being delivered in partnership between TfGM and Salford Council, will improve bus reliability and ease congestion through the upgrade of traffic signals and an extension of the left turn lane on Lancaster Road. The works will also improve accessibility through a new controlled crossing.

The works will take place Monday to Friday between 8:30am and 6:00pm and on Saturday from 8.00am to 1.00pm. To ensure disruption is kept to a minimum, the works affecting traffic flow will be carried out between the following hours:

•    Wigan-bound side of the A580 between 8:30am – 2.30pm

•    Manchester-bound side of the A580 between 10:30am – 4.30pm

Drivers are being urged to take care while travelling, allowing extra time for journeys if they are travelling by car or bus.

Notices will be placed on local bus stops for more information about any temporary bus stop relocation or bus route diversions required during the works.

For the safety of commuters and the workforce, a 30mph speed limit will be in place through and between the junctions for the duration of the project.

Further work on the A580 will occur on Mosley Common Road, to improve traffic flow with a new left turn and pedestrian crossing points for safer negotiation of the junction.

From Tuesday, January 2, lane closures will be in place Eastbound, Monday to Friday, between 10:30am and 4:30pm and Westbound from 8:30am to 2:30pm.

A full closure to the right-hand turn from the A580 into Mosley Common Road North will start on Monday, January 15, at 9:30am and continue until Friday, January 26, at 3:30pm.

Full night-time closures to the junction will begin from Monday, February 12, to Friday, February 16, between 7.00pm and 6.00am each night.
