WHAT would be likely to rank as the most memorable experience for Ashton diver Anthony Harding?
Being a European champion? His world silver? Taking gold at the Commonwealth Games? Or perhaps winning his Olympic bronze medal as a member of Team GB?
Nine years ago, when Anthony was a pupil at Copley Academy, Stalybridge, he said it was being named achiever of the year at the Pride of Tameside Sports Awards – an event organised by Active Tameside and Tameside Council.
“It was the best moment of my life – I never thought I would win it. I just hope it might inspire others to try diving or find a sport they love too,” commented the teenager.
The superhuman dedication Anthony was showing at that time has paid off handsomely, culminating in a performance at the Paris Aquatics Centre that was good enough for him and partner Jack Laugher to finish third in the 3m men’s synchro.
As a 15-year-old, Anthony spent six days a week travelling to Leeds, leaving school early to ensure he could fit in three hours’ training each weekday and double that at the weekend. Catching up with any missed schoolwork was done in his own time.
He said: “It’s a lot of hard work but it’s also fun. The school has been very supportive.”
Anthony got into diving when he was five and attending Canon Burrows Primary School, Ashton. His mother, Louize, recognised his energy and latent talent and took him to Oldham Diving Club. He developed quickly and was soon going to a high-performance centre. He remains a member of City of Leeds Diving Club.
Back in 2015, Louize said: “Supporting Anthony’s diving is a huge commitment and involves a team effort from all the family, but it’s paying off. I still get taken aback by how much he has come on. It’s magical.”
Given Anthony’s commitment to being one of the best, and the fact he is only just 24, it looks like he could have a few more greatest moments in store.
