The charity Crimestoppers has today launched a new initiative in Salford, to help keep people safer and to help reduce serious crime after a record increase in reports received.
Last year, the charity received over 14,000 pieces of information on crime in Greater Manchester, which was up 6% on the previous year.
Crimestoppers has run several campaigns over the last 12 months across Greater Manchester, to raise awareness of its anonymous reporting service.
Residents are being encouraged to tell the charity information on drug dealing, knife and gun crime, criminal gangs, anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse and drink and drug driving.
This campaign is part of the charity’s strategy across Greater Manchester to engage with communities, to give them a powerful voice and to increase reporting. Targeted social media activity and leaflet drops will take place and young people will be reached using the charity’s youth service Fearless.org.
Information from the community is vital in reducing crime, with Crimestoppers being a quick and safe way to do that 100% anonymously.
Gary Murray, North West Regional Manager at the charity Crimestoppers, said: “Over the last 12 months, we have seen a very significant increase in reports about Greater Manchester, which has led to seizures of drugs and weapons, arrests and vulnerable adults and children safeguarded.
“Every piece of information given to Crimestoppers is vital in building the intelligence picture of those who are involved in criminal activity, and in helping to reduce crime and save lives.
“In 36 years, we have never revealed the identity of anyone who has contacted us by phone or online, you will always remain anonymous.”
