A man who has spent 38 years in prison for the murder of a barmaid in Birkenhead has had his conviction quashed by the Court of Appeal after new DNA evidence emerged.

Peter Sullivan was jailed for the murder of 21 year old Diane Sindall in 1986 and was dubbed by the press at the time as the Mersey Ripper

The ruling makes him victim of the longest miscarriage of justice for a living prisoner in U.K. history
