Cllr Eddie Moores has officially been appointed as the Mayor, taking over from the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Zahid Chauhan.

Cllr Moores is a resident of Chadderton and was first elected as a Councillor in 2011 to represent the Chadderton Central Ward, then, following the 2023 boundary changes, he was elected to represent the Chadderton North Ward.

Eddie spent his working life in the rail industry, where he served a four-year engineering apprenticeship. On completion of his apprenticeship, he went on to hold a variety of supervisory, technical and management roles before retiring in 2010.

For the last two years, he has also acted as Oldham’s Deputy Mayor, putting him in great stead for the year ahead. He is joined by his wife Kath Moores, who will be Mayoress.

Cllr Moores has a long list of distinguished service as a Councillor, previously serving as Cabinet Member for Children, among other roles. He also serves as a Governor of the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and a Director of the Cranmer Education Trust. He is also a Trustee of the Henshaw Education Trust, the Oldham Enterprise Trust and the Chadderton Federation of Community organisations, Chair of Governors at Mills Hill School and Blue Coat School and a Governor at the Radclyffe School.

During his Mayoral year, Eddie will be raising money for the Children’s Ward at the Royal Oldham Hospital, Positive Steps Oldham, MAHDLO and for the restoration of Foxdenton Hall. Eddie firmly believes that investing in the work of these organisations will benefit the whole community,

Promoting the Health and well-being of our residents will also be a major feature of his work in the coming year, with a particular emphasis on mental health and well-being, smoking cessation, prostate cancer and dementia.

Cllr Moores said of his appointment: “It’s an absolute privilege to serve as the new Mayor of Oldham. To have the opportunity to serve our local community and represent Oldham is such an honour. I’ve never felt prouder than I am today to be from Oldham and call it my home.

“One of the greatest honours is to have the opportunity to work with local charities, which are very close to my heart, meaning all money raised will be kept in our borough for local people. I pledge to raise as much money as I can for them during my term and hope the borough will join me in my fundraising efforts.

“I’m really looking forward to all aspects of being mayor, including meeting and greeting residents, supporting community events, fundraising for my chosen charities and of course showcasing Oldham as a great place to live.

“Finally, I’d like to thank our retiring Mayor, Cllr Zahid Chauhan, for the fantastic job he has done as Mayor. It has been a pleasure to see him thrive in the role. Thank you to everyone who has supported my journey to reach this honourable moment.”
