The first in a series of Blue Plaques to celebrate black artists in Greater Manchester was unveiled yesterday and it  commemorated the life and work of Denise Johnson

The unveiling at City Centre venue Band on the Wall was the first in a series that will celebrate the role of black artists across the region

Denise Johnson died at the age of 56 in 2020

Her stunning voice can be heard on many iconic singles and albums over the last 30 years.

These include New Order, Primal Scream Johnny Marr, The Charlatans, Michael Hutchence, 808 State, Electronic, Bernard Butler, Ian Brown, The Waterboys and A Certain Ratio

Karen Gabey, one of the organisers of the event said that Denise Johnson’s vocal presence is part of the fabric of Manchester and UK music.
