The Bushop of Liverpool has resigned following allegations earlier this week of sexual assault and harassment saying that he doesn’t want to be a distraction

Earlier Diocesan leaders said the Bishop of Liverpool’s position is “currently untenable”

They asked him to step aside while allegations made against the Right Rev John Perumbalath by a female bishop are investigated

t also revealed that Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, the interim head of the Church of England after Justin Welby resigned in November, was made aware of the allegations after Perumbalath was promoted but before he was formally enthroned as Bishop of Liverpool in April 2023.

Bishop Perumbalath, aged 58, is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the Chelmsford diocese on separate occasions between 2019 and 2023, in his previous job as Bishop of Bradwell in Essex.
