President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the US presidential race

The move comes after a dismal debate with Donald Trump and questions over his ongoing health

Biden has also endorsed vice President Kamala Harris to take over. The Democrats now have a month to formally choose their candidate to run in November against Donald Trump

His decision to withdraw his bid for re-election spells the end of a political career that has lasted more than 50 years

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted to social media.

The president said he would address the nation later in the week about his decision.

More than 30 Democrats in the House of Representatives had called on Biden to stand down as the nominee and pass the torch to another candidate, arguing he could not win in November and risked tanking the party’s chances down the ballot.

Biden is the first US President since LBJ in 1968 to not seek re-election in a general election.
