Researchers from Alliance Manchester Business School have launched a new online tool to help Staff Networks amplify their voices within organisations in response to a lack of research and evidence to the impact and efficacy of staff networks

The new online tool (which is free to use) will allow Staff Network Chairs to identify opportunities to improve their group’s impact in different areas and consequently improve the working lives of underrepresented groups through tailored feedback.

The tool has been built following two years of AMBS research involving qualitative interviews with EDI officers and Staff Network chairs in the public and private sectors.

The research identified five key areas that can amplify the voice of Staff Networks: a clear voice purpose, formal voice channels, operational support, leadership support, and self-organisation. To drive meaningful change, networks must prioritise their role as change agents in shaping their organisation’s EDI agenda.

Effective networks establish structured communication channels with management, gain operational and leadership support, and ensure strong self-governance through clear objectives and defined roles. The Staff Networks Self-Assessment Tool helps networks evaluate these dimensions, offering tailored feedback to strengthen their voice and enhance their impact in creating more inclusive workplaces.

Project Lead, Dr Isabel Távora said: Staff Networks are incredibly important for influencing organisational change and supporting representation so it’s essential that the efficacy of these channels is measured and demonstrated. We are delighted that our research has led to the creation of a practical tool that empowers staff network chairs and EDI leads to amplify the voice of staff networks and their potential to make workplaces more inclusive.
