The owner of Oldham Athletic has completed a 3,000 mile row across the Atlantic Ocean raising over a quarter of a million pounds for Alzheimer research

Frank Rothwell crossed the finish line in Antigua after 64 days at sea where he was reunited with his family and Judith, his wife of 53-years.

He is the oldest person ever to have rowed across the ocean solo at the age of 73 having left the Canary Islands on the 12th December

On the last day of Frank’s challenge, he fell asleep and drifted slightly off course worrying his family who could not make contact for a few hours

Disembarking from the boat Frank told reporters

When we changed the name of the race to ‘world’s toughest row’, I thought the name was wrong. It is wrong. It should be the world’s toughest anything.

“Nothing could be harder than that. That is the uktimate challenge. I felt every emotion imaginable doing that.”

He took the challenge in memory of his brother-in-law Roger,  and close friend Phill, both of whom died from Alzheimers.
