Manchester-based theatre and arts venue 53two kicks off their Spring season with a new production, ‘A Pineapple’. A stark, often funny and visceral story takes the audience on a trip to the future; what our lives might be like? Will global warming finally take hold? Who will be in power? What will we eat?

Decades into the future, the planet is rocked by a perpetual storm. Survivors are placed in government issue ‘Pods’ to match their wealth and live in isolation to await gradual extinction. The pod is all Nia has ever known. When her grandmother Connie decides that her time might be coming to an end, this isolation ends and with it, a world unexplored, is unlocked.

Hosted in the iconic 150-year-old arches, the subterranean, bunker-like vibe is to be amplified with Simon Naylor, Creative Director of 53two, bringing this piece to stage. He said;

‘‘ ’A Pineapple’ is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Olivia has managed to create a truthful world in a fictional future, that is so multi-layered, it’s one of the most gripping plays I’ve ever read. Perfect for 53two and with the help of venues like The Dukes theatre, who were there at the first read, it will propel us to the next step in producing new writing.”

53two have forged a name for themselves housing only new work, never performed before globally or, outside of London. With this piece, they are delighted to be supported by Dukes Lancaster as they join forces with the Lawrence Batley Theatre, to continue to grow their network across the North.

They strive to create theatre that everyone can be a part of, keeping it accessible in every sense of the word. Throughout the run, Pay What You Can Tickets will be available, the show will be BSL interpreted and a number of £10 Earlybird Tickets will be available. Free tickets will also be offered to community groups and colleges across Greater Manchester.
