A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with three counts of murder in connection with the stabbings in Southport on Monday

He has been remanded in custody to appear  at Liverpool Magistrates Court, Derby Square today

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said: “Whilst these charges are a significant milestone within this investigation, this remains very much a live investigation and we continue to work with our partners from Lancashire Police and Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW).

“I would like to thank all of the forces who have offered and supplied support to Merseyside Police during the last three days and I can confirm that we are being supported with investigative resources from across the North West.”

Police on Merseyside have arrested a fifth man in connection with the riot that took place on Tuesday evening in the town

The 39 year old from Southport was arrested after police attending a seperate domestic dispute recognised the man from footage of the disorder in Southport on Tuesday, where he is alleged to have thrown rocks at officers and struck a police van, and where it is believed the head injury was sustained.
