Northern Quarter street art and rainbow-bedecked Canal Street have been revealed as some of the most ‘Instagrammable’ destinations

Manchester’s iconic Northern Quarter street art and rainbow-bedecked Canal Street have been revealed as some of the most ‘Instagrammable’ destinations in the UK, according to a new nationwide study.

Researchers from Vin Crowd polled the nation to find the places modern Brits most love to snap for social media – and while Kew Gardens in Richmond, London came top of the list with 25 percent of the vote, two of Manchester’s iconic and coolest neighbourhoods clocked up 12 percent of the overall votes combined.

Other north west destinations that made the cut included Liverpool’s Beatles Statue and Liver Wings street art.

Also on the hit list was London’s Camden Market (14 percent), which has 452,000 “check in” tags on Instagram, the iconic White Cliffs of Dover (24 percent) and London’s Tower Bridge (also 24 percent).

The multi-coloured Brighton Beach Huts (11 percent) also made the list, as well as the view from Primrose Hill in London (9 percent) – which also has 283,000 tags in posts on the ‘Gram – and the capital’s Columbia Road Flower Market (6 percent) with 66,400 Instagram tags.

Other Insta perfect places are the Houses of Parliament (14 percent) and the picture-postcard Portmeirion in Wales (13 percent).

The research of 1,000 social media loving Brits also revealed why they like snapping UK spots, with seven in ten (71 percent) saying there’s so much history to be seen across the UK, while 61 percent admit that some British landmarks are simply stunning.

43 percent enjoy taking pictures of UK cities because they have a great mix of “urban” and “green” spaces, while 36 percent appreciate the cultural context of certain locations, such as seeing where famous people resided.

The research also reveals that Manchester is considered the fifth most Instagrammable city in the UK with 13 percent of the vote.  The city also has an incredible 17.8 million check in tags on Instagram.

The capital was voted the most popular with 57 percent of the vote, followed by Edinburgh (34 percent) and Liverpool (17 percent).

Other cities popular with social media users are Brighton (14 percent and 7.5m posts on Instagram), and Glasgow (11 percent and 7.8m Insta posts).

Jade Fowles from drinks firm, Vin Crowd, which commissioned the research said, “While Vin Crowd is in Co-ops up and down the country, it was born in Greater Manchester, and is still created at the Kingsland Drinks site in Irlam. We are proud that our wonderful city ranks so highly, especially among so many areas of natural beauty.

Our Vin Crowd canned spritz drinkers love a picturesque hotspot for their Instagram grid, as they regularly tag us in their amazing shots when they’re out and about. The research shows that Manchester is well and truly up there with some of the most beautiful and selfie worthy locations in the country.”

Over a third of the Instagram users polled (35 percent) insist they never visit somewhere new without taking photos, while 27 percent admit they’ll retake a picture numerous times in order to get something perfect for the ‘gram.

The research also uncovered the most Instagrammable cities in the world, with Paris taking the top spot (55 percent), followed by New York (54 percent) and Venice (37 percent).

Instagram fans also enjoy taking photos for their account in Barcelona (34 percent), Rome (33 percent) and Las Vegas (30 percent).
