This coming Friday sees Manchester Military History Society (MMHS) visiting the Irish World Heritage Centre.

The evening is to commemorate the life and tell the extraordinary story of Patrick O’Connell, an Irish international who captained Ireland to its first Home Championship and who was also one of the first £1000 signings.Patrick lived in Manchester during World War 1 and MMHS will be delivering a short talk on that period.

He not only went on to captain Manchester United but also managed in Spain where he remains a household name. He won La Liga with Real Betis in 1935 before ‘saving’ FC Barcelona during the difficult Franco years.

Patrick is buried in an unmarked grave in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kensal Green, London.

MMHS will join compere Alan Keegan and Martin Logan of IrishTV, who will introduce football historians, MMHS and authors, interview former Manchester City and United legends before handing over to the football memorabilia auction.
