The city had been chosen along with Birmingham, Leeds and Sheffield to launch the service that has been trialled in London since the autumn.

From 3pm today riders can request a vehicle driven by an uberASSIST partner-driver who arrives ready to give additional assistance to riders.

uberASSIST will offer riders additional assistance in accessing the vehicle if required, and the reassurance and ease of communication that comes with one of Uber’s top rated partner-drivers. All drivers have completed a disability equality course, developed and delivered by disabled trainers working for Transport for All.

Research by the Extra Costs Commission, launched by the disability charity Scope, shows disabled people use taxi and private hire services more often than non-disabled people, and many say they’ve been overcharged while travelling.

uberASSIST offers an additional transport option that offers extra assistance alongside the same convenience, safety and reliability of every Uber journey – and will cost the same as our lowest priced uberX service. uberASSIST vehicles can accommodate most folding wheelchairs, walkers and scooters.
Mustafa Khanbhai, Uber’s General Manager for Manchester said:

“We want everybody to be able to get a convenient, safe and affordable ride at the push of a button. The expansion of uberASSIST is an important step towards making our service even more accessible for riders across the country. We’re always working hard to make sure we can serve every part of every community in every city.

“Following the launch of uberASSIST in London, we have received great feedback both from riders who use the service and partner-drivers who are proud to be able to offer additional assistance.”
