The campaign led by leading tree planting charity City of Trees, and supported by Hadfield Wood Recyclers marks the end of tree planting season and the start of Spring and calls on all those who have helped new trees take root across Greater Manchester.

Last year saw the first ever ‘Big Tree Count’ with organisations, individuals and community groups totting up over 165,000 new trees they had planted across the region.

City of Trees aims to plant 3 million trees over the next generation – one for every man, woman and child in Greater Manchester and wants to create towns and cities that are greener, happier and healthier.

Part of their remit is to find out what tree planting is happening across the region and the campaign captures the great work being done, from individuals planting a fruit tree in their garden to encourage wildlife, to housing associations creating community spaces.

Andy Long, Woodlands Officer comments; “Tree planting season comes to an end when the trees come out of their dormant period and start to come into leaf.

“The Big Tree Count is a great way for people to celebrate their success – totting up their tree totals and telling us how they have been helping to green Greater Manchester”.

He adds; “City of Trees is a movement, and we really want everyone to come together to help plant more trees and reap the benefits they bring for both people and the environment”.

Geoff Hadfield, Managing Director of Hadfield Wood Recyclers who are supporting the campaign said: “We’re delighted to be supporting this campaign as part of our wider goal to protect and maintain the environment for future generations in Manchester.”

As a way of thanking people for sharing their tree planting totals, City of Trees are running ‘A Tree for A Tree’ scheme which will see them supply a new sapling for every tree that has already been planted, subject to terms and conditions.

They are also offering free wildflower bird and butterfly seed packs.

The campaign launched at the start of April to coincide with the end of tree planting season and will run for around a month.
