This week, those who are reading, researching, writing or relaxing in the library may well find themselves being regaled by the unforgettable tones of none other than Brian Blessed OBE.

Every day, 15 minutes before closing time, a short message is played throughout the five floors of Manchester Central Library to inform visitors that it will soon be time for them to reluctantly close their books, log off from the PCs or Wifi and head for home.

This time-honoured public information message has traditionally been relayed to the public with little fuss or fanfare.  Until now.

Because this week, those who are reading, researching, writing or relaxing in the library may well find themselves being regaled by the unforgettable tones of none other than Brian Blessed OBE.

The legendary star of Flash Gordon, Blackadder, Peppa Pig and countless Shakespearean productions for screen and stage has added his unmistakable voice to a list of local celebrities who have recorded special “closing announcements” for Central Library.

Former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh, Sky Sports broadcaster Gary Neville, Happy Mondays vocalist Rowetta, BBC Radio Manchester presenter Becky Want and ITV reporters Paul Crone and Lucy Meacock have all contributed their voices to the project.

The star-studded line-up will take over the closing announcements for at least the next fortnight, with library staff hoping to add further well-known voices to their list of library-loving celebs in the future.
